The association Ecological Intervention of Heraklion invites us to attend the local event for the 22nd Euro Birdwatch on Sunday October 4, 2015. The event will take place at the Aposelemis Dam, near the village of Avdou, and specifically at the temple of Agios Konstantinos, from 10.00 to 14.00. We join the largest bird watching event in Europe, coordinated by BirdLife International in more than 30 countries, where people of all ages can participate for free, spend a day in nature and learn valuable information for the birds of our region. In Greece the event is organized by the Greek Ornithological Society and in Crete by the Ecological Intervention of Heraklion, WWF Hellas (observation center for the wetlands of Crete and Lesvos) and the Educational / Cultural Association of Avdou.
The program includes bird watching, environmental workshop for kids (in Greek) and other educational activities related to the migration of birds, and a small feast with food and drinks. The aim of the event is to cross an important message for the protection of wetlands, where migratory birds rest, breed and find the essential resources for their survival during their long trips. Millions of birds pass by Greece as they head to warmer climates in the South to spend the winter. Participation is free.
Directions: To find the event, you need to drive towards Lassithi Plateau, taking the intersection from the National Road to Agios Nikolaos. Before you reach the village of Avdou, you will turn left towards the temple of Agios Konstantinos. Park your car and follow the signs to find the event.
What to bring: if you try to observe the birds up-close, you will disturb them and scare them away. Therefore, we advise you to bring binoculars (there will be a few binoculars and telescopes in the event). If you want to take pictures, ideally you will have a tripod and a telephoto lens. Wear comfortable clothes for the mountain and avoid bright colors that will draw the attention of the birds. For any questions, find our volunteers and specialists.
