The Greek National Opera and the Suitcase Opera come to Crete (Rethymno & Heraklion) to present "Pagliacci", the most famous opera by Ruggero Leoncavallo (free entrance, with priority coupons distributed at the entrance one hour before the show).
The opera Pagliacci (clowns) was composed in 1891-1892 and tells the tragic story of the head of a wandering theatre of commedia dell'arte. The Clown Canio must make his audience laugh, although he has just been informed of the infidelity of Columbine, portrayed by his wife, Nedda. "Ridi Pagliaccio!" Sings in the heartbreaking aria just before the beautiful and lively Columbine is faced with his passionate jealousy. The boundaries between fiction and reality begin to blur. The angry and deceived Clown stabs his unfaithful wife and her lover on the stage. Shocked exclaims the audience "La commedia è finita!" - "The play is over!".
The Suitcase Opera is an initiative of the Greek National Opera, launched in 2011 as an artistic action aiming to introduce great Opera works to the wider public and rural areas. The productions of the Opera of the suitcase are flexible and traveling in unexpected places (cultural centers, museums, libraries, archaeological sites) with excellent performers of the National Opera, accompanied by a piano instead of the whole band and all the sets ... in a suitcase!
