The Archaeological Museum of Heraklion, in the frame of its mission to bring the local community closer to the museum's actions, organizes in collaboration with the University of the Mountains an exhibition with the title "Ariadne's thread and Penelope's loom. Penelope Gandhi at the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion".
The events will take place from Tuesday May 24 to Monday June 20, 2016. The programme includes:
- The installation of a Minoan vertical loom replica
- The installation of a traditional loom, and a presentation of the art of weaving from local weavers
- Short film screenings on the production and processing of flax threads (linen), silk and wool, herbs used for natural coloring, thread processing, the structure of the loom, patterns and weaving techniques
- Speeches and discussions
- Educational programmes
- Thematic tours
Visitors will have the chance to learn more about the weaving tradition on the island, from Minoan times to modern times, and experience the great value of handicrafts.
