12th International Congress of Cretan Studies

Additional Info

The 12th International Congress of Cretan Studies will take place in Heraklion from September 21 to 25, 2016. The largest congress of archaeological, historical, literary and ethnological studies of Crete was launched in 1961 by the Society of Cretan Historical Studies in the Basilica of St. Mark, a Venetian building restored by the Society. The conference takes place every five years successively in each of the four regional units (prefectures) of Crete. This year the Congress returns to its cradle, Heraklion, and is organized again -for the sixth time in its history- by its founder, the Society of Cretan Historical Studies.

The 12th International Congress of Cretan Studies starts on Wednesday, September 21, at 17.00, in the Basilica of St. Mark. Professor Grigoris Sifakis will open the session on behalf of the Organizing Committee. The first plenary speakers are archaeologist Gerald Cadogan, vice president of the British School in Athens, and Angelos Chaniotis, professor of ancient history at Princeton University.

From Thursday September 22 to Sunday September 25 sessions will be held at the Cultural & Conference Center of Heraklion. A total of 361 original announcements will be presented by 514 Greek and foreign researchers, divided into three sections corresponding to three major periods of Cretan history: prehistoric-ancient Greek, Byzantine-medieval and modern.

The congress languages are Greek, English, French, German and Italian.  The thematic axis of the all parts of the congress is the movements of people, ideas and goods, focusing on the island of Crete.
