As part of our 4th International Summer School on Engaging Local Communities in Heritage Management through Archaeological Ethnography, we invite you to view and experience the outcome of this year’s research, in situ in the village of Gonies Malevyziou.
For the past month, our team - composed of archaeologists, anthropologists, ethnographers, cinematographers and students of different cultural backgrounds - has worked towards representing the historical, cultural, mnemonic, communal, personal and heritage value of objects in Gonies. Having noted in previous years what a treasure-trove of objects, modern and ancient, the village is, we have this year investigated how material culture acted and acts as a carrier of the local inhabitants’ memories about their deeply layered past, and how it today defines their - and our - present.
In collaboration with local inhabitants, our team has collected information about a range of items related to the practice of shepherding, shoe-making, cooking, gaming and traditional belief practices. This information will be presented during our event in the form of a short talk and an exhibition, which will not only incorporate some of the objects themselves, but also photographic, video and artistic representations of them.
