"From dream to decay": Visual Arts Exhibition / Monitor fest

Visual arts exhibition with artworks that invite the visitors to explore the creative process, research and wandering of artists, from dream to decay.

The central approach of this exhibition is to allow the public to enter the mind of the artist, to follow his path from the moment he envisions the artwork: to experience how from the chaotic abyss of the mind with visions, dreams and ideas, comes to life a project, an artwork or an unfinished business (our studios are full of those). An example is the artist Manuel Salvat  that we showed in Mesogeios in 2014. Manuel committed suicide in 2016, leaving a studio of unfinished works that his friends chose to use and exhibit after his death. Manuel created an archive of people’s dreams (with the archives of Lyon, France) that we are opening to the public of Heraklion.

Matrice collograph Fanny

Fanny Allié, 2017, Collograph (matrice)

All the artists that participate in this exhibit show works that have a quality of direct communication with the public. Whether they come from the “utopian” dimension, influenced by sociopolitical change or the interaction with the public, these artworks creative a new space for observing and thinking through art.

Many of the international artists in this show, are people I had the chance to meet while traveling for my own work, and all have interesting paths and social influences I am very happy to share with the public of Heraklio, such as Adonis Volanakis, Louise Devin, Shani Ha, Fanny Allié, Ronald Cornelissen, Blanka Amezkua, Maria Papanikolaou, Dan Perjovschi, who all honored us by sending their works from different parts of the world.

There are photographers and cinematographers who walk among us and send us back images of time that stopped, of our world cut out and isolated for us to observe, of reality stranger than fiction, such as Manolis Foinikianakis, Stylianos Papardelas, Vasilis Flouris, Olia Paspalaki, George Kamilakis, Dorota Walentynowicz , Barbara Noiret, Celine Murphy, Antje Larsen and Sibylle Meder.

Through this project I had the chance to bring together very interesting works by Mathew Halpin, Ιωάννα Ξημέρη, Τσιμήκα Αλεξία (Dizi), but also artists who took the bold position of interacting with the public with works in progress such as  Kostis Tzortzakakis and Βικυ Χρηστάκη.

The creative space Comeet, as a special collaborator, opens its doors (that are always open to ideas) to workshops and projects throughout the exhibition.

Finally, the former space for interaction with the public in the police station becomes an open space, with  ceramic work in all creative stages, interaction with plastic materials such as clay and bread dough. This is a «carte blanche” to ceramists, education specialists, architects and artists : Minas Rasoulis, Stella Malliaraki, , Iro Papalouka, Ioannis Kouvidis, Nikos Veneris and others.

"One time ago a crazy dream came to me

I dreamt I was walkin' into World War Three

I went to the doctor the very next day

To see what kinda words he could say

He said it was a bad dream

I wouldn't worry 'bout it none, though

Them old dreams are only in your head"
