Additional Info

The Miunicipalty of Chania, the Municipal Gallery of Chania, and the Fine Arts & Music Foundation Β. & Μ. Theocharaki unite to present the exhibition of Spyros Papaloukas - Ode to greek modernism. The exhibition includes 98 masterpieces of this unique artist from the famous collection of the Foundation.

A painter of colors, known for his exceptional religious art, landscapes, still life and portraits, Spyros Papaloukas (1892-1957) is considered to be of the greatest modernist artists that defined greek art of the 20th century. A great teacher and researcher, he studied in Athens and Paris and gradually developed his own unique style, exploring forms as a totality of aesthetic rules, light as a fundemental element of synthesis and color as a dominant material. He was mostly interested about the materials of painting and perhaps less about the iconographic part of it, which he had already mastered.  Step by step, he formed his own artistic expression, which exposed his admiration for nature and human existence.
