Where did the Mosque go?

Kornarou square is still known as "Valide Tzami" (Valide Mosque) to the "older" inhabitants of Heraklion. The younger generation doesn't know that on the site where the square extends today there once was a Mosque, dedicated to "Valide Soultana", the mother of the Sultan. A few centuries and a "conqueror" back, the Mosque was the temple of the Savior (Sotiros) and belonged to the Order of the Augustinians.

The Mosque was demolished by the Greek junta in 1967 in order to create the square you see today.
