Platia Strata

Strada Larga of the Venetians, also known as Platia Strata (wide road) to the old inhabitants of Heraklion, and today as the Andreas and Maria Kalokairinou Avenue, or just Kalokairinou. Always a commercial road, once upon a time wider than today - hence the name. At times it was known with other names: via Imperialis, strada Panigra, Contrada. This photo was taken by the famous Swiss photographer Fred Boissonas in 1920, whose work was exhibited this summer in Elounda.
